Plot A mysterious entity called The Dark One is slowly gaining strength, and its minions advance through time and space. To combat it, the players are asked to seek out and battle specific minions of the Dark One, in order to stop the expansion of the entity. Gameplay The player takes the role of a godlike being known as a Stalker. The Stalker, named Makai Rood, is tasked with fighting the minions of the Dark One in order to reverse its advance through time and space. The battle takes place in a fantasy setting. Each player controls a different Stalker, who must work together with another player to advance through the game and fight the minions of the Dark One. The Stalker (who is known as the Traveler) follows a force known as the Light that uses the power of the Light to close the gaps between moments in time. Each player's ability to close the gaps in time is limited by the number of Light points they possess, so players must work together to advance as quickly as possible. The game is composed of five quests, each of which is more difficult than the last. Development The game was first previewed on March 30, 2001 at the Sega booth at the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3). The full game was later previewed at the 2001 Game Developers Conference. It was released on November 7, 2001 in Japan. In 2004, the Japanese version was released on PlayStation 2 and Xbox. An English-language version was later released for the PlayStation Portable in 2006. A limited edition of the game was released for PlayStation 2 in Europe and Australia. Reception Allgame gave the PlayStation 2 version an average rating of 3.5 out of 5, and called it a "masterpiece" due to its graphical and audio quality. Official Xbox Magazine awarded the Xbox version 90% with the PlayStation 2 version earning 70%. They noted the game's lack of online capabilities, but complimented the game's graphical and audio quality. They also noted the game's exclusive content, such as the cooperative abilities, the story modes, and the ability to control multiple characters. GameSpot awarded the PlayStation 2 version 8.8 out of 10, also noting the game's excellent graphics and audio quality.
